The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent is one of the most heavily counterfeited and/or altered coins in American Numismatics. Being able to authenticate coins is even more important than knowing how to grade them. Help with authenticating is provided below and the 4 positions of the S mint mark on genuine examples are shown in the last photo attached. The coin sold here S Mint mark is of position #4

The Four Official Mint Mark Positions
  • Position 1: The top of the ‘S’ sits just above the bottom legs of the date’s digits (higher up near the 9 digits).
  • Position 2: The top of the ‘S’ is flush or even with the bottom level of the date’s 9 digits.
  • Position 3: The ‘S’ is positioned horizontally near the center of the space between the second 9 and the 0 in 1909, aligned lower with the base of the 9s.
  • Position 4: The lowest position of all; the ‘S’ is located significantly further down and to the right, sitting well below the date without touching the 9 digits, appearing fairly vertical.
Key Supporting Diagnostic Checks
To confirm a coin is genuine, inspect these additional features alongside the mint mark location:
  • The ‘S’ Mint Mark Shape: Genuine ‘S’ mint marks feature clean, parallel serifs at the tips pointing in the same vertical direction.
  • Raised Dot Inside the ‘S’: Authentic San Francisco mint marks from this era often show a tiny raised die marker dot inside the upper curve or loop of the ‘S’.
  • The Reverse V.D.B. Initials: Look at the designer’s initials at the bottom-center of the reverse. On genuine examples, the central crossbar of the letter ‘B’ has a distinct slant (approximately 45 degrees), and the bottom of the ‘D’ has a slight angle.
  • Surface Tool Marks: Many fakes are created by artificially adding an ‘S’ mint mark to a regular 1909 VDB or adding “V.D.B.” letters to a standard 1909-S. Look for tool marks, raised bases, or altered metal around the ‘S’ or the initials
