1873 Indian Head Cent Closed 3 Doubled LIBERTY XF Detail Corrosion Removed

Here we have one of the  more famous error coins in American Numismatics, an 1873 Indian Head Cent, Closed 3 Variety with a very easy to see Doubled Liberty

Also classified as FS-101, Snow-1, this coin has been recently through PCGS Restoration to have a small spot of corrosion removed and is graded PCGS XF Detail, Corrosion Removed. This coin was originally in an ANACS XF40 Details, Corrosion, prior to being sent to PCGS for the restoration process to remove the corrosion. The last 2 photos show the original holder and the label returned by PCGS after crossing it over. This coin has now not only been graded by 2 different top tier 3rd party grading companies at the same grade level, it has also been authenticated as genuine by the same 2 companies!

A very small indicator of this corrosion can be seen by the last A in America at 5:00 on the obverse. Otherwise this is a wonderful coin with very strong detail – Full Bold and easy to see Doubled Liberty and only very light high point rub. Trace original mint  luster remains in the protected areas, and the coin has a pleasing deep brown consistent patina.

Adding to this coin’s mystique and desirability is the modertealy large Retained Reverse CUD . This can be seen around 3:00 on the reverse, and is reinforced as aretain ed CUD by the metal flow lines confirming it is not PMD. This decent sized Reverse CUD only adding a uniqueness to this coin’s rarity, desirability and collectibility.

PCGS Price Guide has this coin at $3650 in Problem Free XF40 and the last XF40 to sell at public auction was from January, 2021, when  a Heritage Auctions Sale realized $3960
